Civil society is getting louder, independent voices are growing and Malaysians are no longer relying on political parties or traditional media for information.
The 1MDB crisis became a major wake-up call, pushing demand for alternative sources and creating more space for public debate.
But there’s still work to do. Political funding needs more transparency, MPs should get fair and equal resources, GLC appointments need stronger oversight and states should have more room to shape their own economic policies.
With better voter education, stronger local governance and the monarchy’s constitutional role as a stabilising force during political uncertainty, the real question is: are we finally ready to move beyond the old political playbook and build a better, fairer one for the future?
